The Pre-Broadway tryout of the 1938 production of The Sea Gull starred Alfred Lunt, Lynn Fontanne, and Uta Hagen. During the opening night in Boston, the audience reportedly gave the cast ten curtain calls.
The Seagull is generally considered to be the first of Anton Chekhov's four major plays. It dramatizes the romantic and artistic conflicts between four characters: the famous middlebrow story writer Boris Trigorin, the ingenue Nina, the fading actress Irina Arkadina, and her son the symbolist playwright Konstantin Treplev.
