The Philadelphia Story
On this day in 1939, The Philadelphia Story starring Katharine Hepburn as Tracy Lord, began its pre-Broadway tryout at the Colonial.
The new comedy by Philip Barry completed a two-week run before immediately opening on Broadway. The play was a great success and was Hepburn's first great triumph after a number of Hollywood failures. Hepburn starred as Tracy Lord once again in the film adaptation of the play that was released in 1940, alongside Cary Grant and James Stewart.
Hepburn returned to the Colonial in 1975 for the tryout of A Matter of Gravity by Enid Bagnold.
